.doc to pdf
How do I convert a doc file to a pdf?
Most polular solution for this is open office. Just google for "open office" and you will find it as top result.
It's a complete office suite (like MS-Office). The word processor called 'Writer' is what you are looking for.
It can open .doc file for you (and save in that format).
You open your .doc file in Writer, select "File" from main menu, then select "export to pdf". That's it!
It's free (and open source). Millions of people around the world use "Open Office" as free replacement to Microsoft's MS Office
Hope this helps
Cheers

I haven't used this myself but I've heard good reviews about it:
http://www.globalgraphics.com/en/gdoc/free-creator
According to its propaganda, you can also use it to convert .pdf to .doc and to merge PDFs.
I found and use a free program called "CutePDF Writer". It does a great job at converting virtually any commonly used document file to a PDF file format; including E-mails and whatever you view in your browser. It can be downloaded free at - http://www.cutepdf.com/products/cutepdf/Writer.asp.
Try it. You'll like it.
If you have Adobe Acrobat installed along with MS Word there should be a tab on the menu bar that says 'Adobe PDF' which gives choices to convert the doc to the pdf format. Otherwise, there is a free program offered by PrimoPDF that says it will convert many file types to a pdf file. Try this link: http://www.primopdf.com/index.aspx
