Watch out for scare ware

Vince Alline reports on the latest scare ware: http://www.pcworld.com/article/227992/windows_scareware_fakes_impending_... Just remember the bad guys will try and trick you. So if your computer starts asking you to fix something it may not be legitimate. If you are not sure, just turn the computer off and turn it back on. You might also want to run a scan with your anti-virus software, too.

"Malwarebytes" -- Free vs Paid / Registered Version

During the last few years, "Malwarebytes" has become a popular and widely used malware detection and removal program. Most users have installed the free version. I too have been using it in my three computers, and have also installed it in many others. Among "missing" features in the free version, are automatic / scheduled Quick or Full scans for malware; and more often than not, many computer users forget to "schedule themselves" to perform regular periodic scans manually. But my concerns from recent experience go much deeper than scan scheduling.

Internet Speeeeeeeeedddddddddd!!!!!!!!

If you ever want to check your internet speed, you can use speedtest.net .  They report that they have generated over 2 billion speed tests and they do it internationally.

Here's what they report about the fastest countries and states:

"As of today, the Global Download Index is 7.68Mbps, and based on GDP, the top countries by download speed are:

South Korea (36.5Mbps)
Latvia (23.3Mbps)
Republic of Moldova (21.5Mbps)
Japan (20.3Mbps)
Sweden (19.8Mbps)

In the U.S., the top performing states are

Delaware (15.6Mbps)
Rhode Island (15.2Mbps)
Massachusetts (15Mbps)
New Jersey (14.1Mbps)
Virginia (13.6Mbps)"

The full report was generated as of May 2010 and can be read here.
So where does Tennessee stand on this list?

Don't Be Firesheeped!

There is a new extension to the Firefox browser called Firesheep.  You are not safe using unsecured wireless networks like you find in coffee shops.

"The Firesheep plugin can hijack your Facebook, Twitter, and Flikr sessions while you are connected to unsecured wifi. What do we mean hijack? We mean that it can steal your sessions, pretend to be you, and you won’t even know it."

Read more about it here.

Hey! Do Not Hit the F1 Key!

Janice Schneck points us to this article: http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/f1key.asp And Vince Alline gives us some more information here. Vince's article says, "If you happen across a site that displays a message box that won't go away that exhorts you to hit F1, log off or use the Windows Task manager to close IE."
