OFFICER REPORTS
President, Jim Peterson
·
This room is almost completed for classes. (Meeting was held in
the room being renovated for computer classes.)
Vice President, Bob Mugge
·
The cabinet room is locked with a key. There is a combination
keypad beside the door, but it is not yet connected. The laptops and projector
are in the cabinet which also is locked. The printer will sit on the counter
and will be hooked up to operate inside the room.
·
Someone requested use of these chairs for a large meeting Thursday
evening, June 12. That’s fine.
·
The card players are disappointed with the 6 tables here, but
apparently did not make their preference known before the renovation. If they
want to trade out these tables for smaller square ones, it would be okay. This
is not dedicated to this Club.
·
The projector will sit on the second (middle) table at least for
the time being.
Secretary, Jan Schneck – No report.
Treasurer, Dick Schmeling
·
Distributed the financial accounting for the month of April. The
Club received $195 in dues and $0.28 of bank interest. The only expense during
the month was the reimbursement to Victor deGroote for website expense. These
resulted in a net inflow of $60.28. The Pass-Through account received $190 and
expended $273.09 for a net outflow of $83.09. We started the month with
$3,260.45 and ended with $3,237.64. Dick noted that $1,108.82 is locked up in
the designated Pass-Through account for Technology Access Program, so the net
operating balance is just over $2,128.82.
·
Dick has completed the Club’s equipment inventory and has given a
copy to the Secretary. The inventory includes all of the Club’s new equipment
with serial numbers, etc.
·
Regarding the Club’s scanner, Dick learned that the little
computer that was to be used with the scanner is no longer being used. They’re
back to using the suitcase full of desktop equipment. Apparently the equipment
got plugged into a higher volt supply than is appropriate; the computer is okay,
but the scanner seems to have a technical problem. It seems Victor has the
scanner back, hopefully temporarily, to work on it.
·
Some equipment moves around, so the inventory is some times hard
to accomplish. Someone needs to keep Dick informed as to where certain
equipment is located.
·
Checked with Bruce Martin of State Farm regarding insurance on the
nearly $15,000 worth of Club equipment. He quoted $375/year. Kutschera said he
will have his agent check with several carriers for competitive bids.
Past President, Warren Sanders
·
We’re nearing mid-year and the election is in November. All of us
need to send Warren an e-mail regarding our own intention for next year. Each
should write, in your own terms what you do in your position. Committee Chairs
also should comment on your major activities.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Membership Committee
·
Bob Kutschera reported that there were 70 attendees, including 5
guests at the General Meeting.
·
The Club has 222 paid memberships and 135 additional members,
bringing our total member count to 357. That number will be revised slightly
since we seem to have received double payments from a couple of members and even
a third payment from one member. When those monies are returned, the membership
numbers will be adjusted accordingly.
·
The 2008 budgeted amount for membership is $3,525. If the Club
has membership revenue of around $200 between now and October 1, and if we
collect the same amount of dues in October through December that we did last
year, we should meet, and hopefully exceed, the budgeted amount.
·
Peggy Mills, our new Membership Committee member, was introduced
to the reception/sign-in table at the May General Meeting.
Communications Committee
·
Jim Peterson advised that we still have no chairman for this
Committee. He is open to suggestions as to what to do about it.
·
Karen Brown offered to take care of the Channel 3 and Connection
announcements for the Club. Bob Foster will let Karen know about planned
Programs.
Program Committee
·
Bob Foster commented that he felt the General Meeting went pretty
well. Some people, of course, are at a higher level than others. He tries to
aim presentations at the general population, but some of it still went over some
people’s heads.
·
Kutschera suggested the explanation of
www.belarc.com be published in the Newsletter.
·
The June Program will be presented by Smart Computing. He
has asked the presenter for a dozen mouse pads. She promised to check her
inventory.
·
Kutschera suggested a presentation sometime regarding computers
yesterday versus today.
·
Stieghan thanked Foster for taking over his Genealogy Program
presentation last month on such short notice when he was called away for a
funeral.
·
Foster returned the secretary-recorder speaker to Radio Shack
because the one contained within the recorder works as well as it needs to. He
could not get money, but was allowed to trade for equal value, so he traded for
a $30 flash drive which will be used as a door prize.
·
We need to advertise our Programs as they are coming up, so
Kutschera suggested putting a blurb in the Tell-E-Gram which goes out to about
1,200 households in the Village.
·
Foster said his wife suggested a program on developing your own
website. Dale Noll suggested a program on Data Recovery. Sanders recommended
something on home networking and wireless. This might be better in the
classroom, though.
Technical Access Committee
·
Sanders reported that the Club has given away one more system. We
have 28 or 29 ready to go.
We’re not getting names of people to give them to now, partly because the school
year is winding down.
·
In June Sanders is going to a home health agency in Knoxville to
discuss the program with staff there. He also wants to go back the Loudon
County Interagency Council. Over a year ago we got a lot of interest there.
Sunday he met with a teacher at Lenoir City High School who teaches computer
programming and maintenance. We agreed to support his class in any way we can.
The real point is we need to locate families to give these computers to, so we
will welcome suggested sources of names.
First Level Support Committee
·
Malcolm reported that his group had about 3 house calls and 3
telephone problems, but people want to know how to sign up for classes. Some
don’t join the Cub because they don’t know enough about computers. We need to
get the word out that we’re not Geeks. People don’t realize that we try to
teach them to get more out of their computers and they don’t know about First
Level Support. Brown suggested an article in a month-end issue of the
Connection when it goes to everybody. Alline told the Lenoir City High teacher
that the Club is open; his students could join and/or come to a meeting.
Education Committee
·
Mugge said he will try to get classes laid out to present to the
June Meeting. Brown suggested a handout at registration listing the classes
that are planned and asking for checkmarks with preferences and also asking for
other suggestions of interest.
Special Interest Groups
Committee
·
Don Stieghan had no report.
OLD BUSINESS
·
Mugge said we still haven’t solved the issue of how to save
student files in the XP environment. Mugge plans to schedule the first classes
with subjects not requiring students to save.
·
Foster suggested somebody check with Victor on the status of the
scanner. Peterson agreed to do that.
