COMMITTEE REPORTS

Membership Committee

·         Bob Kutschera’s written report states that the General Meeting drew 62 members and 5 guests plus representatives from Smart Computing Magazine.  There were 7 memberships added and $105 was submitted to the Treasurer with required documentation.

·         The Club now has 226 paid memberships for 2008 plus 141 additional members, bringing the total member count to 367.

Communications Committee

·         Peterson announced that Penny Visconti has volunteered to chair this Committee.

Program Committee

·         Bob Foster stated that Bob Kutschera had contacted Robert M. Whitten of Oak Ridge by e-mail with a copy to Foster regarding a possible presentation for the July 1 General Meeting.  If they can arrange the Program by July 1, the topic will be their super computer and a history of computers.

·         Foster purchased two 4-gig flash drives at $15 each for door prizes.

·         Some people commented to Foster that they had enjoyed the June Program.

·         Karen Brown has spoken with Carl Beck at Best Buy and he is willing to come to a meeting to discuss Apple computers.  Foster agreed to contact Mr. Beck.

·         Brown reminded Foster that notices of the General Meetings are to go directly to her.

Technical Access Committee

·         Sanders’ written report was in the form of a letter to Dave Hudgens for inclusion in his article about the TVCUC as follows:

The Club’s Technology Access Program (TAP) celebrated its first anniversary on June 2.  On that date in 2007, the Club gave away its first refurbished computers.  During the year, we gave away 85 systems to homes that did not have a computer and to various organizations.  Each system consists of the basic computer (PC, monitor, keyboard and mouse) plus a working printer with good ink supplies, speakers, and a ream of paper.  The intent is for the recipient to be able to set up and use the system without having to purchase any supplies.  The homes that have received these systems include over 160 children.

The Tellico Village Community Church allows the TAP Committee to use one of the model homes donated to it by the Cooper family for use in this endeavor.  The Committee consists of about 20 volunteers and is co-chaired by Vince Alline and Warren Sanders.  Most of the computers that are given away are donated to TAP by local residents.  The volunteers clean all personal data out of the PC by “wiping” the hard drives, and then they load a fresh operating system, a version of MS Office, anti-virus/anti-spyware/anti-adware software and other useful programs.  Each system is capable of internet access either through dial-up or cable/DSL.

If you have unneeded computers or peripheral equipment that you would like to donate to this cause, you can drop it off at the gray model home between the Church and the Tellico Village POA offices.  If pick-up is needed, call Warren Sanders at 408-0304 or Vince Alline at 824-3380.  It is best to make the donations during the afternoon on Monday through Thursday.

First Level Support Committee – No report

Education Committee

·         Mugge said Dave Hudgens asked if he should promote our classes.  Mugge advised him that we’re not quite ready yet.

·         He has received 38 surveys back so far.  He has 19 instructors on his list and 42 courses have been identified as wanted by the membership.  He plans to put these together on a matrix and let the instructors determine when to hold classes.

·         Joyce Knouse suggested a $5 minimum charge to cover materials that will be needed for classes.  We’ll also have maintenance and printer ink expenses to cover.  Considerable discussion followed.

·         Dick Schmeling motioned to charge a $5 fee at sign up.  Karen Brown seconded.  Board approved.

·         Knouse recommended classes be limited to one person per computer.  Brown agreed with this.  Both teach computer classes and claim this works best.  Whether students could bring their own laptop also was discussed.  After some discussion, it was decided that that decision could be left to the instructor.

·         Brown offered to create sign-up forms and also suggested that as class time approaches, reminders need to be sent out because people might forget they signed up or forget the date of their class.

·         Peterson stated that we will try to have a couple of classes in July.  We can, of course, expect to have some growing pains.

·         Knouse offered to give some instructions to teachers if some of them need it.  They will need to get the instructors together with the Education Committee to talk about these things.

Special Interest Groups Committee – No report

OLD BUSINESS

·         Knouse asked whether the overhead projector will be remote controlled.  Peterson said that it won’t be yet.  For the time being it will be on the middle table.  Mugge mentioned that the lights are very bright, but Stieghan said that with the blinds closed, he has had no lighting problems.

·         Knouse suggested the Club have an open lab where people can come in and ask questions with Board members here to answer.  If the answer is not immediately available we could get back to the person.  Brown suggested we do this once a month.

·         Regarding the slide projector, Victor deGroote thinks the optical device failed.  Peterson contacted the company but nobody has gotten back to him yet.  The issue is how much it will cost to fix it.  There are new devices out there now that are much easier to operate, but he will wait to hear from the company.

NEW BUSINESS

·         Foster said that two new people have signed up for the Program Committee.

·         Peterson reminded everyone that we’ll need nominations coming up within the next few months, so if anyone has in mind any individuals that may volunteer for positions to be sure to let the Nominating Committee know.
