President' Notes
by Warren Sanders

At the June Board of Directors meeting, the Board unanimously voted to make the computer give-away project an official function of the Club.  This project has just started, with the first computers being given out on June 2.  This program came about when we learned  low-end systems were not selling at the garage sales and someone commented there should be something we could do with unsold units other than taking them to the recycle center.  I contacted several agencies in the area that work with the needy families to solicit their assistance in identifying worthy families.  I also contacted the Community Church Crafters, the Good Neighbor Shoppe, the Beautification Committee, and Habitat for Humanity to get their permissions to give away the unsold computers that had been donated to them for the garage sales.  They all readily agreed the project, as outlined, was a worthwhile thing to do.  The clean-up committee then got back together and prepared 13 systems, complete with working printers and a ream of paper.

I wish that all of you could have been there for the first give-away day.  It was a very heartwarming sight to experience the excitement of the children and the thankfulness of the parents as they walked away with THEIR computer.  They were all very happy to receive them.

Several of the agencies have agreed to support the project financially, agreeing to cover the expenses of the ink cartridges and the paper needed to provide a system that is ready to function for the recipients.  The Club should not need to provide any financial support to the project.  We are working on disclaimer forms to be signed by the donors who give the computers and by the recipients who receive them to help remove any possible repercussions to the Club.  I hope this project can continue for a long time.

This project does not include the clean-up of computers for the garage sales; although the same committee also works on those computers.  If you are interested in helping with this committee's work, please contact me at 408-0304 or at wsanders@chartertn.net.  We have a good time working together, and we learn a great deal about computers in the process.

Here is a HEADS UP which may save you a wasted drive to the nearest driver license renewal office.  "For those of you who have not recently renewed your Tennessee drivers license, a law requiring proof of U S Citizenship or lawful permanent residency was passed effective July 1,2004 that states in order to obtain a TN driver license, first time applicants, new and returning residents, applicants reinstating a driver license after being revoked, suspended, or canceled (regardless of when the license was issued) and anyone issued a TN driver license or photo identification license since January 1, 2001 upon renewing for the first time, to provide documentation they are with a U S Citizen or lawful permanent residency".

If you think you might be affected by this law, one way to determine that is to attempt renewal on line.  If you are involved, your application will be rejected and you will get a message telling you that "proof of citizenship is required.

Photography & Cartoon

Victor's Great African Adventure. Many of your know Victor recently made a safari to Africa. He has lots of pictures but this one seemed to me to tell the whole story with the mountain background and his two Masia guides.

How great it is that we can live in this country and be able to enjoy a little of our much more diverse world.  We are indeed a blessed people!

July CartoonThis image struck me as an expression of how we have all felt about our computer at one time or another.  I am sure the next thing the husband said was - "call Howard, Jim or Victor"!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a very special month for us as Americans.  I trust you will have an opportunity to contemplate and celebrate our freedom.  We need to consider what has made us such a successful nation and we need to remember those who sacrificed themselves so that we can enjoy the many fruits of a free society.

Have a great month!
