First Line Support

The following subject was covered in the May 2006 issue of our
Newsletter, but based on the number of complaints I hear about
opening attachments, I thought we should repeat this advice.
--------------------
How to Open Email attachments with .eml extensions. .
At the Desktop, Select START. Select My Computer. Select Tools from
the Menu. Select Folder Options from the drop-down list. Select File
Types from the available tabs. Under extensions, scroll through the
alphabetical list to the E's . Under Extensions, you should see "EML
Internet E-Mail Message." Below, it should say "Details for 'EML'
Extension" and should read, "Opens with: Outlook Express."
If not, select New. Type EML as the File Extension. Select
Advanced>>. Next to 'Associated File Type', click the down arrow.
Scroll down to 'Internet E-Mail Message' and select it. Select OK.
Now, when you look under File Types, EML entry, it should show an
open envelope and "EML Internet E-Mail Message," (as described in the
first paragraph).
If that does not work, contact me. |

I would like to add a position to this committee which
would help us improve our communications with others in the
village. Remember our club only operates because people like you
volunteer to use their time and talents.
Here is a overview of that position and I am hoping this will be just the job you have been looking for. If so, please call me and we can begin.
"Communications and Collaboration with other
Groups, helps develop program ideas and speakers for the general
meetings and SIGs, participates in joint programs, develops community
outreach as defined in the Charter, and encourages donations and/or
discounts for hardware and software needs of the TVCUC (APCUG, East
Tennessee Computer Society, various trade associations, Tellico Village
Library, Senior Center, etc.)".
Another need we have is for someone to represent the needs and
wishes of our growing membership from Kahite. If you are that
person, please call me so that we can work on developing ways to better
communicate with and serve that part of our community.

Free Stuff and Helpful Sites by Frank Fritchman

Jan Schneck sends us this advice she extracted from www.Snopes.com.
"A word to the wise. E-mail petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress or any other municipality.
To be acceptable, petitions must have signed signatures and your full address. Same with "prayer chains": be wary.
Almost
all e-mails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are
similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send
business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the
Guinness Book of Records for the most cards. All of this type of e-mail
is used to collect names and "cookies," tracking info for
tele-marketers and spammers to validate active e-mail accounts for
their own purposes.
Any
time you see an e-mail that says forward this on to "10" of your
friends, or "Sign this petition and you'll get good luck," or whatever,
it has either an e-mail tracker program attached that tracks the
cookies and e-mails of those folks you forward to, or the host sender
is getting a copy each time it gets forwarded and then is able to get
lists of "active" e-mails to use in spam e-mails, or sell to others
that do.
When
you get one of these emails, tell your friends why you are not going to
forward it and thereby keeping their name and email address off of some
SPAM mailing list!"

Technology
continues to change our lives in may ways, including our computer
usage. In an article from the August 20th & 27th issues of
BusinessWeek, their Cliff Edwards tells about a new mouse being offered
by Logitech International. This new mouse is called the MX Air
and eliminates the need to make cramped dragging motions on a flat
surface next to your keyboard. Instead, you can surf the Web,
play games and control a home theater PC from up to 30 feet away.
If you are familiar with how Nintendo's Wii game system works, you will
have some idea how this new mouse works.
If you want to read the entire article, let me know and I can send you a copy or go to BusinessWeek at - www.businessweek.com/go/techmaven - and look for the article entitled "The Mouse that Soars"

Last
month we told you how to get a telephone number you need using a Web
site. A new TVCUC member, Audrey Larson, sends us another Web site we can use. That is www.DEXONLINE.com.

Here
is something to keep your eye open for and to begin reading
about. That is the term "CableCard". On July 1st a Federal
Communication Commission rule took effect which essentially says
that consumers can now purchase their own cable box and as a
result there will be a new device call a CableCard which will allow us
to replace our current cable box we are all using. This will be a major
change in the options available to us so you will want to keep your
eyes and ears open on this subject because any changes to the
technology available to us today is never simple.
TiVo HD
Here is some information of interest to those of us who are cable customers.
A recent
article in Business Week, August 6th, by Stephen Wildstrom mentioned
the TiVoHD unit was on the market and was a replacement for your
standard cable box - at $300. The author says it has several
excellent features not available on our current cable box
but did mention that set-up was difficult and was not for
the faint of heart - it was too new.
The idea
here is to begin to read about this change in the market place so that
you can "take the plunge" when you think you are ready.
If you want to read the entire article, let me know and I can send it to you.
WEBKINZs
Now here is a "heads up" for all your grandmothers out there. Have you run across the new craze out there - Webkinz? Look at www.webkinz.com.
Take the tour and see what you think. Our grandchildren are "into" it,
in fact, so is our daughter-in-law who loves the "on-line puzzles."
What this new thing resembles is the "stuff a Bear" fad that was so
popular just a short time ago. Only with this, you purchase an animal,
give it a name and them you register the animal and name on the
Webkinz site and you get all kinds of on-line benefits for one year.
You can even send email to your grandchild's new pet! How fun!
Check out the web site and see if this might be on your list for this coming holidays |

It has been a HOT month for all of us but as
I write this note I know relief is on the way. At
the same time, I am reminded it has not been nearly as hot
here as it has been for our solders in Iraq. Regardless
of what position you take on this war, I think this quote I
recently received from an e-mail is worth repeating. "We
should ponder, some day when this is over, what it is we do to grow
such men, and women, what exactly goes into the making of them".
I know part of the answer is due to some of the moms and dads who read this letter. Thanks!
Remember it is always COOL at our monthly meetings so I will look forward to seeing you there.
Have a great month!
