The first three open house sessions in the Learning
Center were very well received. Total attendance was 16 on
Saturday, 17 on Wednesday, and 14 on Friday. We will be having
more of these sessions in December and next year, but the specific
schedules will not be decided until after Thanksgiving.
I have had a few requests for a method to move
e-mails and address books from one computer to
another. There have been a few articles published, but up to
now I haven't seen all of the information in one place, nor have I been
able to get it to work. I finally got the procedure figured out
for
Outlook Express, and have prepared a set of instructions for doing it. This worked on my systems.
It is for those computers running XP. Vista may be similar, but I haven't done that yet.
Instructions for moving your e-mails from one
XP computer to another (where you want the entire address book, folders and set of e-mails transferred) are as follows:
Moving your
Outlook Express e-mail folders and messages:
Open Outlook Express.
Click on Tools.
Click on Options.
Click on the Maintenance tab.
In Cleaning Up Messages, click on the box labeled Store Folder.
In the new window titled Store Location, highlight the entire name
of the folder that appears. It will be wider than the window;
make sure you get it all. Most likely it will be C:\Documents and
Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{36 hex digit
number}\Microsoft\Outlook Express. The parts in red will be
different for each user and computer. Do not click OK.
Press and hold CTRL, then press C.
Prepare a place to put the data that you can use to physically
move the data to the new location. I suggest using a USB flash
drive.
Open Windows Explorer. In the Address bar at the top, click
Delete to clear whatever is there, then press and hold CTRL, then press
V. Note that Explorer now has gone to the folder where all the
e-mail folders are and has listed all of them. Click on the first
one, scroll to the bottom of the list, hold down SHIFT, then click
again. All folder names should be highlighted. Press and
hold CTRL, then C. Move to and highlight the location of the
flash drive in the left column. Then hold down CTRL and press
V. Note that all the .dbx folders containing your e-mails
(inbox.dbx, etc.) are copied to the flash drive.
Take the flash drive to the new machine and insert it.
Using Windows Explorer, locate the new data on the flash drive and highlight all the folders as you did in step 9.
Hold down CTRL and press C.
In Windows Explorer, highlight the directory that matches the one
in step 6 (except that the user and 36 hex digit number may be
different). Hold down CTRL and press V. Note that all the data
folders transfer. You may have to verify the replacement of any
or all of the existing folders, depending on which folders were
previously in use on the new machine. Replace only the ones you
wish.
Moving the address book:
In Outlook Express, select Tools, then Address Book.
In the main menu, select File, then Export, then Other Address Book.
Select Text File (Comma Separated Values .csv) as the export format.
Click Export.
In the new menu that appears, browse to a location to save (suggest a flash drive).
Give the file a meaningful name (such as your initials and date)
and make sure the file type of .csv is selected, then click Save.
Move the flash drive to the new machine.
Open Outlook Express, select File, then Import, then Other Address Book.
Highlight Text File (Comma Separated Values .csv) then click Import.
In the new window, browse to the location of the flash drive and click on the file you saved.
Click Next, then click Finish, then click on Yes to All.
The system will indicated that it completed the transfer.
Click Close.
