Message from President Elect
by Sharon Addison
During this Thanksgiving, in addition to our many other blessings, we can also be grateful for the many contributions made by the members, SIG leaders, directors and officers of the Tellico Village Computer User Club over the last eight  years.  We've come a long way since the initial exploratory meeting in the winter of 2001.

As a result of their hard work, we can provide expanded training opportunities for our members using our new set of laptops and the computer training room at the Chota Rec Center.   Your directors and officers will appreciate hearing from you about what you would like to see offered in training, user support, and helpful programs in the coming year.
I look forward to working with all of you in this coming year.  I look forward to seeing you Tuesday at the regular TVCUC meeting and hope you all have a wonderful Holiday Season.
Village POA Communication Difficulties
by Frank Fritchman
You may have noticed some issues regarding the  POA having difficulty with the use of Webmail/Tell-E-Grams, Calendar, and the Current Events on Channel 3.  On November 25 we were notified this was due to a crash of the server supporting those applications.  They are making every effort to correct the situation.
Membership
by Bob Kutschera

The Membership Committee would like to ask a favor of you. Rather than paying at the reception table before each monthly general meeting, we would greatly appreciate it if you would send a check made out to TVCUC to Bob Kutschera, 203 Ootsima Way, Loudon, TN 37774.

How will this help us?

-- First it will greatly reduce the crush of people paying during the few minutes that folks arrive at the general meeting. If cash is used, then we have to make out a receipt whereas a check would serve as the receipt. Also, if there are people wishing to join, we ask them to complete an application to be submitted with the dues payment.

-- Second, the check will serve as a receipt that can be referred to in the event a member isn't sure if their annual dues had been paid.

-- Third, a document is submitted to the Treasurer each month listing the names of new and renewed members along with the method of payment - cash or check (number of check posted to the document). This document is used to certify that the money submitted is accurate and balanced to the number of new and renewed members paying that month.

We greatly appreciate your participation and support of TVCUC and your assistance as requested for payment of next year's dues would also be greatly appreciate.

Special Interest Groups
by Don Stieghan

SIGs meetings generally last for about an hour and half.

Digital Photography-second Thursday at 3:00 PM at Chota Rec Center (contact Jim Noonan at 458-9940)
Computer Hardware-This SIG is not meeting regularly, but if you are interested, contact Vince Alline at 824-3380.

Do you want to be a part of these exciting programs or just ask questions about SIGs?  You can receive meeting announcements and organization information.  Just send your e-mail address to me at tvdon@chartertn.net, or call me at 458-2142 or see me at the TVCUC general meeting.  Also, help is available to start additional SIGs by expressing your special interest.  You do not have to be the expert to lead a SIG to propose the organization of a SIG, just have an interest in the subject matter.

In the future, new SIGs are expected to be created if persons who attend the TVCUC classes want to continue the learning experience.  Persons who want to consider having a SIG can express that interest to the class instructor or to Don Stieghan directly.
TAP (Technology Access Program)
by Warren Sanders

Help is coming in but TAP continues to need your help to survive.    In October we told you of our space situation and how you could support our effort to obtain a new working location.  You may do that using a pledge form which has been added to the club web site, www.tvcuc.org,  and we urge you to give us your financial support.  A small amount from many of us will allow this very beneficial project to continue.

We are all involved with our giving at this time of year so why not make one of your gifts this year a donation to a very worthy cause where you can watch it work, and if you like, can join by participating in our reconditions efforts.
Learning Center
by Bob Mugge

There are no classes scheduled for the month of December. I continue to look for people who are interested in teaching so please contact me if you are interested.

The first three open house sessions in the Learning Center were very well received.   Total attendance was 16 on Saturday, 17 on Wednesday, and 14 on Friday.  We will be having more of these sessions in December and next year, but the specific schedules will not be decided until after Thanksgiving.

I have had a few requests for a method to move e-mails and address books from one computer to another.  There have been a few articles published, but up to now I haven't seen all of the information in one place, nor have I been able to get it to work.  I finally got the procedure figured out for Outlook Express, and have prepared a set of instructions for doing it.  This worked on my systems.  It is for those computers running XP.  Vista may be similar, but I haven't done that yet.

Instructions for moving your e-mails from one XP computer to another (where you want the entire address book, folders and set of e-mails transferred) are as follows:

Moving your Outlook Express e-mail folders and messages:

Open Outlook Express.
Click on Tools.
Click on Options.
Click on the Maintenance tab.
In Cleaning Up Messages, click on the box labeled Store Folder.
In the new window titled Store Location, highlight the entire name of the folder that appears.  It will be wider than the window; make sure you get it all.  Most likely it will be C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{36 hex digit number}\Microsoft\Outlook Express.  The parts in red will be different for each user and computer.  Do not click OK.
Press and hold CTRL, then press C.
Prepare a place to put the data that you can use to physically move the data to the new location.  I suggest using a USB flash drive.
Open Windows Explorer.  In the Address bar at the top, click Delete to clear whatever is there, then press and hold CTRL, then press V.  Note that Explorer now has gone to the folder where all the e-mail folders are and has listed all of them.  Click on the first one, scroll to the bottom of the list, hold down SHIFT, then click again.  All folder names should be highlighted.  Press and hold CTRL, then C.  Move to and highlight the location of the flash drive in the left column.  Then hold down CTRL and press V.  Note that all the .dbx folders containing your e-mails (inbox.dbx, etc.) are copied to the flash drive.
Take the flash drive to the new machine and insert it.
Using Windows Explorer, locate the new data on the flash drive and highlight all the folders as you did in step 9.
Hold down CTRL and press C.
In Windows Explorer, highlight the directory that matches the one in step 6 (except that the user and 36 hex digit number may be different). Hold down CTRL and press V.  Note that all the data folders transfer.  You may have to verify the replacement of any or all of the existing folders, depending on which folders were previously in use on the new machine.  Replace only the ones you wish.

Moving the address book:

In Outlook Express, select Tools, then Address Book.
In the main menu, select File, then Export, then Other Address Book.
Select Text File (Comma Separated Values .csv) as the export format.
Click Export.
In the new menu that appears, browse to a location to save (suggest a flash drive).
Give the file a meaningful name (such as your initials and date) and make sure the file type of .csv is selected, then click Save.
Move the flash drive to the new machine.
Open Outlook Express, select File, then Import, then Other Address Book.
Highlight Text File (Comma Separated Values .csv) then click Import.
In the new window, browse to the location of the flash drive and click on the file you saved.
Click Next, then click Finish, then click on Yes to All.
The system will indicated that it completed the transfer.
Click Close.

TVCUC's 35mm Slide Scanning Project
 by Howard Jones

In 2005 your computer club purchased a Pacific Image Model PS 3600 slide scanner. The objective was to provide a tool and the instructions for its use to members with 500 to 5,000 slides. Many of these images were taken as our children were growing up and digitizing them preserves the memories and enables as to make duplicate sets of pictures for our families to share. The slide scanner is a "modified" Braun slide projector that enables a 50 slide tray to be loaded for scanning at a much faster rate than scanning them individually or in the relatively small groups using a flat bed scanner with an attachment.

A fee for several days use of the scanner was charged and the scanner was used by many of our members. However, there remains a list of those who paid the fee and still haven't used it. Also, there are many new club members who may not be aware that the scanner exists.

Earlier this year the scanner malfunctioned during use and it has been out of service. At the last board meeting the board approved the funds to either repair the failed scanner or replace it. The manufacturer was unable to repair it but has offered a replacement at a substantially reduced cost. A replacement scanner has been ordered and upon its receipt, a refresher class will be scheduled to demonstrate its use.

If you have an interest in this project, ask a board member how to get on the scanner use list.

Free Stuff, Cartoons & Photographs

Xerox is doing something cool!  Go to this web site, www.LetsSayThanks.com,  and you can pick out a thank-you card which Xerox will print and it will be sent to a soldier currently serving in Iraq.  You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed forces.

-------------------------
Many of you have heard the Kim Komando radio show on which Kim answers all types of computer related questions.  She also has a web site which is, www.komando.com, where she offers lots of help and suggestions.  Be cautious because you may be tempted to try some of the free stuff which you may not need or want after it is on you machine.

Recently she offered an article on how to lock your files.  This subject may be of interest to you if you are getting lots of holiday guests and/or teenage computer users using your machine. If you are, look at,  http://www.komando.com/downloads/category.aspx?id=4519

GIFT CARDS - I have seen several articles warning us to be careful when considering the purchase of gift cards for Christmas presents.  In this current economic situation there are many stores who may not survive. so a gift card purchased from them may become worthless.  Gift cards are a great idea but you may want to consider getting them this year from your local bank.
-------------------------

INFO COMMERCIALS - Have you noticed a very subtle change in the language of the offers made by many if not all of these companies?  They will make the "BUT WAIT" offer to double your purchase but in the very small print they will require you to pay a SECOND shipping/handling charge on the double portion of your order.  That will most likely be a expensive charge so be aware!

Here is a great note from Dick Schmeling ---

Just leave it up to Google to come up with something like this!!!  Here's a "speed dial" number worth putting in your cell phone and home phone.
1-800-goog411.  Why?

This is an awesome service from Google, and it's free.  It is great when you are out on the road sitting behind the wheel driving.  Don't spend your money on information calls and don't waste your time manually dialing the number.

Example: If  you are driving along in my car and  want to call the golf course but not remembering the number, hit the speed dial, 1-800-goog411, for information that you have pre-programmed.

The Google voice at the other end says, "City & State."

You might say,  " Garland , Texas ".

Google says, "Business, Name or Type of Service".

You say, "Firewheel Golf Course".

Google says, "Connecting".

And "Firewheel" answers the phone.  How great is that?  This is nationwide and it is absolutely free!  Click on the link below and watch the short clip for a quick demonstration.    Go to www.google.com/goog411   and they have a short film clip on this service.

Bob Wilson Photo
This great aerial photo was sent to Bob Wilson by a friend and Bob now shares it with us.  It shows Pauline Lake on the left of Newberry Volcanic Crater with East Lake on the right.

And this is one of a series of ten I got from a friend.  Don't you love how many of these beautiful pictures are available to us because we are bless to have our computers and know how to use them? If you want to see the balance of these pictures, drop me a note and I will send them to you.  Enjoy!

I trust you are enjoying another great Thanksgiving holiday.  Are we not a blessed nation to be in the midst of a great economic crisis and continue to enjoy such abundance?  Most of us remember days when life here was not as good as it is today.  Join me in thanking those who gave us this great country and in counting my blessing as I enjoy our family turkey!
