Message from the President
by Sharon Addison

Good News, Bad News, and Thank You's:  The good news is that the newly implemented "Drop-In Workshops" at the Chota Rec Center continue to be a resounding success.  If you have questions or information that you need answered in a one-on-one environment, as a member of TVCUC you can take advantage of these workshops.  They are announced to this email list and other venues as the dates and times are scheduled.  There are typically 4 - 8 of our experienced members who are there to answer your questions and give instruction on a first come, first served basis.  You can bring your computer or we can use one of the club laptops which are available in that room. See some pictures below!

The bad news is that we are not able to offer on-call First Level Support at this time.  Our previous chair, Dennis Malcolm has completed a very successful year of coordinating this effort and we thank him for his work.  We will need to get someone to chair this team and help organize its operation if we are to resurrect it.  You don't have to be an expert to provide this much needed support. If you like to help people, have experience using your PC and you are interested, please contact me to discuss what is involved.  In the meantime, members can take advantage of the Drop-In Workshops at the Chota Rec Center where many questions can be addressed.

A big "Thank You!" is due to each of the many people who help make the TVCUC organization the success that it is.  As an example, Dennis Malcolm and the First Level Support team provided support to many computer users in 2008 and Dennis continues to provide support during our Drop-In Workshops.  Coordinating and scheduling these workshops are Jim Peterson and Bob Mugge.   Assisting in these workshops are Dick Snyder, Ken Ray, Vince Alline, Bob Foster and Victor de Groote.   If I have overlooked someone in this list, please forgive my "senior memory" and let me know.

Another "Thank you!" to those who have volunteered to help with the Spring Garage Sale on Saturday, March 21st (and drop-off/setup day Friday, March 20th). If we can get a few more volunteers for the general part of the sale, the TAP program (computers to non-profits and low-income families) can be assured of keeping 100% of the proceeds in their sale room for this year and in the coming years.  Collect your items to Drop-off for the sale on March 20th and contact sharon.addison@att.net or 458-8777 for bulky item pickup or to volunteer.  It's a lot of fun and it's for two good causes: the TAP program and the Boys & Girls Club of Loudon County.

TAP (Technical Access Program)

I want to echo Sharon's message that members can support TAP by signing up to help with the garage sale coming up on March 21. We will keep 100% of the proceeds from the computer room at the sale, but that is with the stipulation that club members step up and volunteer to help.  Please offer you help!  This is something most of us are able do in support of the club and our community.  Workers are needed on Friday and Saturday and you can work as many hours as you can offer.  Please call Sharon at the number given in her article.

We received three new memberships last month. These are listed below.  Please look for them at our general meeting and make them welcome.  They are:

Gerald & Christine Campbell
Susanne Churchill
Linda Creamer
Glen Strange
-------------------------

The Membership Committee would like to ask a favor of you. Rather than paying your annual dues (cost is $15.00 per membership) at the reception table before each monthly general meeting, we would greatly appreciate it if you would send a check made out to TVCUC to Bob Kutschera, 203 Ootsima Way, Loudon, TN 37774.

How will this help us?

-- First it will greatly reduce the crush of people paying during the few minutes that folks arrive at the general meeting. If cash is used, then we have to make out a receipt whereas a check would serve as the receipt. Also, if there are people wishing to join, we ask them to complete an application to be submitted with the dues payment.

-- Second, the check will serve as a receipt that can be referred to in the event a member isn't sure if their annual dues had been paid.

-- Third, a document is submitted to the Treasurer each month listing the names of new and renewed members along with the method of payment - cash or check (number of check posted to the document). This document is used to certify that the money submitted is accurate and balanced to the number of new and renewed members paying that month.

We greatly appreciate your participation and support of TVCUC and your assistance as requested for payment of next year's dues would also be greatly appreciate.

Several people have asked me for the name of the backup program I demonstrated at the 2/3/09 TVCUC general meeting.  The name of the program is "Second Copy", by Centered Systems.  It can be downloaded at www.centered.com/ for a free 30 trial, or purchased for $29.95.

Most of your friends probably think you are a Geek because you are a member of the computer club - right?  To further that impression here is a subject you can discuss with them.  Have you heard about "Kendle"?  Kendle is a product by Amazon.com, $359, and is essentially a hand held computer you use to do just one thing - read books.  Amazon has just announced version 2 of Kendle which uses "electronic ink" and a background that "looks like paper".  It is wireless, like your cell phone, and you can download your new book from wherever you are - most of them at $9.95.  Their goal is to have "every book" in print or ever printed, in any language available on Kendle.  How about that for a goal!  It already accounts for 10% of Amazon's book sales.  Go to this site to see a review of Kendle.

Here is an important note from Jim Peterson on virus protection.

"FYI All TVCUC computer users.  There is a series of Rouge Virus scanners running around the Internet and they can be a real pain while using your computer.  Please follow the enclosed link which will explain the problem."

PS. Additional free software to remove the rouge scareware, are:  superantispyware, and malebyteware.

Read More!  Vince Alline also sent this link on this series of Rouge Virus scanners.  "Here is a link to a recent article in the PC World discussing this same issue."

-------------------------

Vince Alline sent this information which may be important to you if you have purchased a Dell computer in the last 4 years.

"The following link contains information about a settlement reached between the Tennessee Attorney General and Dell Corporation resulting in possible reimbursements to customers who purchased a Dell PC in the last four years and discovered that Dell was not living up to their promises and/or warranties. Claims must be filed by April 13."

Have you noticed the robins are back!  March will begin bringing our yard to bloom, some of us will begin to follow the "little white ball" more frequently and others of us will be more active with a labor of love working in our gardens and yards.  Enjoy your time wherever you are and be sure to contribute what you can to the success of our club.

See you at the meeting!
