There will be no formal general meeting on July 7th.  However, at 7 PM in that same area at the Yacht Club, Bob Mugge and others will have two or three of our club laptop computers set up and available for you to use in asking application (How do I?) questions.  This would be a great time for you to get some personal one-on-one instructions and answers to "nagging" questions.
-------------------------
The general meeting for August has also been cancelled and AT THIS TIME nothing has been scheduled in lieu of this meeting time. However, watch for special email messages or the August Newsletter because we may have something planned but that decision has not been made at this time.
Board Meeting

The next board meeting will be held Tuesday, July 14th, at  3pm at the Rec. Center.  All interested members are invited to attend. Visitors are welcome.

We've recently added a Calendar section to the TVCUC website to make it easier for you to know what is scheduled in the coming months.  In addition, our Home Page has been changed to provide quick access to the Calendar and the Upcoming Events section.
Message from the President

It's been a busy month for your TVCUC Officers and board of Directors.  The biggest news is that the property lease for the new TAP (Technology Access Program) workshop has been signed and the move to the new location is taking place.  Thanks to Donna Akey, Lakeside Properties who offered the property below Catino's at a reasonable price.  There's a lot of work to be done to get the place ready (including cleaning and shelving setup) and then to get equipment moved.  If you'd like to lend a hand, contact Warren Sanders at 408-0304 or Vince Alline at 824-3380.  And look for an article about our club and the TAP program in the Sunday, July5th News Sentinel.

In other news, Monta Hirzel has agreed to Chair the Program committee and work on getting interesting programs scheduled for TVCUC  and we appreciate her willingness to support our club.  Since she's a new member, many of you may not have met her but please take the time to say "Hello!" at our next meeting.

Dean Miller, our Communications Chair, has been working on the Communications Strategy for TVCUC and has gathered contact names and information to better publicize our events.   He'll be working with our new webmaster, Lou Miller, to keep the content on TVCUC up-to-date and they'll be looking at revitalizing the entire site, so if you have ideas or suggestions on how to make the site more useful to you, please let them know.  Dean and Lou, thanks for taking this on.  This kind of effort and interest makes a big difference in making information available to our members.

Here is some current informaton on programs:

July - Drop-in workshop at the Yacht Club
August - Nothing scheduled at this time
September 1 - Open House at the new TAP location. (Watch for information later about a special door prize on this occasion!)
October 6th - Lois Symington from ETTAC (East Tennessee Technology Access Center)

Finally, there's the issue of wi-fi access at the Yacht club.  The POA has responded to the problem,  the situation is now fixed and we should have a stable environment in the future.  Those of you who were present at the June meeting saw that we could not access the Internet.  After reviewing the situation with the IT Director for the POA , he has made substantive changes in the way the public wi-fi access will work at the Yacht Club.  All the equipment, including the Wireless Access Point (WAP), is now placed behind the wall and the access panel to the equipment is now locked.  If we ever need to get to the equipment, we will go to the manager on duty at the Yacht Club to get the key.  This way, there will be more control of the equipment and unauthorized people will not be able to reconfigure or damage the equipment.  The problem at the June meeting was several fold.  The modem and router behind the access panel had been disconnected and the network wire connection on the WAP had been broken.

Learning Center

Special thanks to Ken Wood, Ken Ray, Karen Brown and Jim Peterson for assisting me in help sessions this month.

The four open house learning sessions held in June did help those who came, but we are not having a lot of customers.  We did not get any specific questions on Word or Excel as I had planned. What is evident from recent sessions is that one-on-one contacts, either using the club laptops or personal laptops that customers bring to the session, seems to provide the best help.

Since we do not have a specific program planned for the general meeting on July 7, I will bring two or three of the club laptops to the Yacht Club that evening, and we will set them up to use for general help at the 7 PM time.  Hope to see you all there!

Since the Rec Center has Kids Camp during two weeks in July (6-10 and 20-24) and our room will not be available, I am not scheduling any Rec Center open houses in July.  Those wanting one-on-one help can call me and we can schedule a session at our mutual convenience.

Lately we have received many calls about losing contact with the Internet while using the wireless network.  Although there can be many reasons for this, a few steps that can be taken will soon get you back on the Internet.

1.  Carefully check the wires to your cable/TSL modem (is your cable TV working properly), your wireless router (the unit with 1-2 antennas, and the Ethernet cable from the cable/TSL modem), and the wireless receiver installed in your computer or attached to your computer.  Are each powered and enabled?

 2.  Unplug the power source to your wireless router, and power to the cable/TSL modem.  Wait two minutes and plug the power cable back in to the cable/TSL modem.  Two minutes later plug the power cable into the wireless router.  Let the wireless work.

3.  Open the icon on the lower right of your screen that says "wireless network connection" (looks like a single computer screen) with a right click.  Then select "repair" and wait for the results.

If this doesn't get your wireless Internet back on line, please call me at 458-3834.

Have a great day!

TAP (Technical Access Program)
by Warren Sanders

We are having a very busy month.  To date we have given away about 250 systems and have given almost 500 children access to a computer and the internet.

We are moving to our new location this week and next.  We can use help in making the move so please be sure to volunteer.  The fact that we are moving means we have now started paying rent and utilities in addition to our other expenses. The kids who get these units will vote some day and need access to the Internet to know what is going on in their world.  Your gift can help make that access available to them. Remember us when you consider how you will give your money in support of our community.

Introduction to Genealogy Classes

Anyone interested in scheduling classes for an orientation to genealogy should contact me at 458-2142 for additional information.  These two classes can be scheduled at the TVCUC classroom for the cost of $5.00/person, which includes researching the Internet for specific family history records.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 8
Jim Peterson

Internet Explorer 8 is a new release and some websites may not yet be ready for the new browser. Click the *Compatibility View* toolbar button to display the website as viewed in Internet Explorer 7, which will correct display problems like misaligned text, images, or text boxes.

This option is on a per site basis and all other sites will continue to display with Internet Explorer 8 functionality. When you click on the Compatibility View button for a site, you don't need to do it again as the next time you visit that site the browser will show it in compatibility mode. If for some reason you'd like to go back to browsing with Internet Explorer 8 functionality on that site, simply click the *Compatibility View* button again.

The Compatibility View button

Try clicking the "Compatibility View" toolbar button to fix the problem.
It's located next to the Refresh button on the Address Bar.

You can maintain a list within Internet Explorer 8 for sites that should be displayed in Compatibility View. From the *Command Bar*, select *Tools*, and then select *Compatibility View Settings* to add and remove sites from this list. There are also options for viewing all websites and intranet sites in Compatibility View.

Stay Safer Online

The Internet has enhanced our lives in nearly every way. However, as more of the things we do every day depend on the Internet, online crime has risen in turn.

Cybercriminals are using increasingly sophisticated and deceptive methods such as:

*Malware* - software that a cybercriminal can use to steal your bank account information, track everything you type, send out malicious software or spam, or harm your computer.

*Phishing* - an attack where a cybercriminal pretends to be a legitimate organization, such as your bank, in order to deceive you into giving up personal information such as credit card numbers and account information.

Both of these methods often involve tricking you into clicking on a link or downloading a file that appears legitimate, but is actually harmful. But cybercriminals are also using more elaborate ways to attempt to compromise websites and attack your computer without your knowledge, including "cross-site scripting" and "click-jacking," both of which are becoming increasingly dangerous threats.

Internet Explorer 8 helps protect you from today's threats, including malware and phishing, as well as emerging threats that can compromise your computer without your knowledge. Other browsers either don't offer you this level of protection or require you to download and configure third-party add-ons to get it, but with Internet Explorer 8 you get it right out of the box, and turned on by default.

Here is a picture sent to me by Dick Schmeling which demonstrates vividly how much our computers have changed in what is really a very short period of time.  December 2007 Pic.

This is a hard drive weighing over a ton and stored only 5 MB of data.  So, appreciate your 16 GB memory stick!  And don't complain about how heavy your laptop is.

This is another fascinating site sent to me by Howard Jones.

You will not believe how much work has gone into this painting. The painting itself is great but as you run your curser over the people it tells you who they are and provides a link (double click on a person) to get more information on each person. This could keep you occupied for hours.

This is an absolutely astounding "Index" to a wealth of information.  All of the people in the painting have been "tagged," as in Facebook.  But it is carried a step further.  By double clicking on any person you are sent to a link about that person in Wikipedia.  I recommend saving this link for future reference.  This could be of great use to students also.

Enjoy the warmth of summer and I will look for you around the village as we swim and walk our beautiful roads.  Be sure to take you "pick-up" device and plastic bag with you and keep our village clean.
