Message from the Vice President
by Warren Sanders

We have had to postpone our annual meeting because we do not have a slate of officer/directors to present.  Why not?  Because not enough people have offered to participate in the leadership of the club.

I hope we can have a full slate to announce at the December meeting so we can have our annual meeting in January, but it is going to require some good old "volunteerism" on your part.  Really, folks, none of these positions are a full-time job.  The majority of them only require attending a 2-hour BOD meeting once each month plus occasionally a little preparation time or follow-on time (after the meeting).  Surely there are a few of you who would be willing to step up to the opportunity!  I certainly hope so, because the club can not exist without officers and directors.

Our effectiveness is limited or increased by your willingness to participate.  Join us!

ORNL FIELD TRIPS. --  For those of you who are pre-registered for the ORNL tour (Nov. 03), plan to meet at the TV Visitor's Center (Cooper parking lot) at 11:45am to arrange for car pooling. The tour will leave TV at 12:00 noon so as to arrive at ORNL by 1:00pm.  If you need further information, contact Bob Kutschera, 408-3092.  The tour is scheduled for 3 hours.

The second tour of ORNL is slated for Tues. Nov. 17.  Assembly, car pooling and times will probably be the same but look for actual details as that date approaches.

TAP (Technical Access Program)
by  Warren Sanders

We have just received our first payment from the United Way.  Those of your who support the United Way will be happy to know we are now one of the many worthwhile groups they support.  Thanks!

We have new numbers to report.  We have now exceeded 315 systems given out and 550 children affected in the homes receiving them.  We can always use more help at the "TAPROOM".  You do not have to be a "geek" to help out and you can set your own hours of work.  The work is all guided by written procedures.  These instructions are really pretty easy to follow and there is plenty of supervision on hand to help you.  Vince is not really the hard task master we have made him out to be so come make some new friends or improve on friendships you already have.

If you think you might be interested, come on over and sit with someone for a couple of hours so you can find out whether or not it is something you want to do.  There is no harm in trying, and no one will think less of you if you try and decide it is not for you.  This is a great way to give back for some of the blessings this country has provided us.  Think how many families may have a better holiday season just because you were here a few hours each month!  It is a good thing!
SIG's (Special Interest Groups)
by Don Stieghan

In the future, new SIGs are expected to be created if persons who attend the TVCUC classes or the one-on-one help sessions want to continue the learning experience.  Anyone who wants to consider having a SIG can express that interest to a class instructor or to me directly.  Just send your e-mail address to me at tvtndon@gmail.com, or call at 458-2142 or see me at any of the TVCUC general meetings.  You do not have to be an expert to lead a SIG or to propose the creation of a SIG; just have an interest in the subject matter.

Look for an email from Charter announceing a increase in Internet speed and it is FREE.  This change does take some very minor work on your part and is not an automatic change.  The title of the email is "New! Doubled Upload Speeds & Faster Downloads with PowerBoost".  If you missed that email, call 1-888-GET-CHARTER to talk to a Representative about how you can be included.

-----------------------
We are all hearing a lot about Windows 7 and if you attend, you will hear additional details at the November general meeting.  Here are two of many web sites with comments on what to expect with Windows 7.

Go to www.komando.com  and and type in Windows 7 in the search bar and there is lots of information.

Also, David Pogue of the New York Times has comments at that site.

This site will amaze you.  It was sent to me by Howard Jones.  Can we believe anything we see anymore?  Believe me, not all our confusion is old age!

Here is your picture for the month.  Sent to me by Bob Kutschera and is one of a series of 9 pictures on working being done at the Hoover Dam where they are building a new bridge over the river.  They are spectacular!

If you want to see all of them, send me a note and I will share them with you.

Enjoy the change of season and pray for some dry weather that will make our road trips to our beautiful mountains even more enjoyable.

See you at the meeting!
