Here is the schedule for the month of March.  These classes are held at the old Rec. Center on Ootsima Way.

Basic Spreadsheets Using Microsoft Excel (2003 or 2007)
Instructor - Bob Mugge

This course is intended for people who are interested in learning about how to create spreadsheets using Excel, but have no or very little experience with spreadsheets or with Excel.  Students will have hands-on experience with Microsoft Excel (included in Microsoft Office) using the club laptop computers or their own laptop with Excel if brought to class.  This is a multi-session course and requires a fee per the club class fee guidelines.

SIG's (Special Interest Groups)

For Mac computer users there is a new SIG, the Mac Users Group.  Any TVCUC member who uses a Mac computer, or would like to know more about using a MAC, is welcome to become a member of the SIG and attend meetings.  The meetings for 2010 are: fourth Mondays of January through May, then September, and October at 3:00 PM at the Chota Rec Center.

Jan Miller is the contact for the SIG, and she can be reached at 458-0658 or TVjeMiller@aol.com for additional information.

One way for new SIGs to be created is for persons who attend the TVCUC classes or the one-on-one help sessions and want to continue the learning experience to request organization of a SIG.  Actually, any member of the TVCUC who wants to consider having a SIG can express that interest to a class instructor or to any member of the TVCUC board

You do not have to be the expert to lead a SIG or to propose the creation of a SIG.  Just having an interest in the subject matter and talking with any board member will begin the process.
FIRST LEVEL SUPPORT
by Joe Solymossy

 An ounce of prevention...

Some of our club members have experienced Malicious Ware that tells them their computer is infected, "but for $79.99 it can be fixed and your computer will be safe".  Until you pay, the MalWare will protect itself.  No downloading, no restore, no editing will get your computer back.  You can still do limited things, but...   Once you pay, it clears up, but you are now a "sucker" and they have one of your credit card numbers.

If you experienced this problem, you know the frustration it has caused you.  Unfortunately, First Level Support can not fix this problem, but you can.  Here is how!

Today, before you forget, download a program called MalWareBytes.  Even if you don't use it regularly (and you should), it has successfully cleaned up this infection.  However, it only works if you already have it installed on your machine before the infection.  If not, then a second level support person (a paid professional) can clean it up.  Make sure your data is always backed up.  Then you will have to take your computer to the person fixing it.

To load MalWareBytes, go to the website http://www.malwarebytes.org and follow the directions to download it to your computer and then to install it.  Install it with a short cut to the desktop.   Allow two hours to run your first scan.  After that, you should update the software frequently and then let it do a quick scan every week or two unless you are on the Internet surfing a lot, in which case you should scan weekly.  The free version of MalWareBytes is not a shield (real-time protection).  You must manually perform scans with the free version.  If you buy the Pro version, then it will provide a shield.

If you would like to attend, please email me at bkkutch@yahoo.com and include your full name, date of birth, and country of citizenship.

To date, over 100 club members have attended this extremely interesting and informative tour.
Back to Back Printer
by Dick Schmeling

Back-to-back printing of multi-page documents can save a lot of paper!  It also saves a lot of filing space.  I have the feature on my main printer and use it frequently.  But in assisting a few club members and friends with computer problems recently, I found that a few of them had printers with the back-to-back printing feature, but they didn't know it.  The fact is that many new printers have back-to-back printing feature, especially the larger "All-In-One" types that can be used to Fax, Copy and Scan documents, as well as Print text and photos.

When you prepare to print a multi-page document, here is a simple way to check for and use the feature if it is on your printer:
1.  On the menu bar, click "File", and on the drop-down menu, click "Print".
2.  When the Print window opens, click the printer "Properties" or "Preferences" button, as the case may be.
3.  In the Properties or Preferences window, or on one of the tabs in the window, check closely to see if one of the printer options permits "Back-to-Back", "Two-Sided" or "Duplex" printing; if so, select it and click "OK".
4.  In the Printer window, click "Apply" (if required), then click "Print".
5.  A printer with this feature will print the first page, stop for about 15 seconds to permit the ink to dry, pull the first sheet back in, print the next page on the back side, and then expel the finished sheet.  The process is repeated for all pages necessary to print the complete document.

That is the "good" news.  The "bad" news is that few printers allow you to setup back-to-back printing as a continuing default, so it must usually be setup (- or at least checked) for each multi-page document that you want print that way.  But for large multi-page documents, the paper savings is well worth the few extra setup steps.

The computer gives us many different and interesting views of our world.  Here is a note from Bob Kutschera recommending a site you may enjoy.

"This is absolutely amazing. I looked up all the places I lived in the past and it works every time. Amazing.  When you enter an address, you will see a picture of that place.
There's a little map with a little man on it - you can move the little man up and down the block if you need to.  I just looked at my childhood home!  Really fun website!  click on
www.vpike.com. You might have to move the picture around some to get the correct view".
