 Dear Victor,

The Tellico Village Computer Uses Club's monthly meeting will be held on July 1st at 7pm on the top floor of the Yacht Club.  Registration is on the Mezzanine level - 4th floor.

Our program will be about the computers at Oak Ridge

  •   "Secret City and Supercomputer: Oak Ridge Then and Now".

The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) was founded in 1992 to advance the state of the art in high-performance computing (HPC) by bringing a new generation of parallel computers out of the laboratory and into the hands of the scientists who could most use them. It is a managed activity of the Advanced Scientific Computing Research program of the DOE Office of Science (DOE-SC) and is located at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Our guest speaker will be Robert M. Whitten Jr., a member of the User Assistance and Outreach Group of the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.  The User Assistance and Outreach Group is tasked with providing technical support to researchers that use the leadership class computing resources of the NCCS.  Robert holds degrees in Computer Science from East Tennessee State University.  Robert is an invited speaker at national and international conferences on high performance computing and has presented at several local organizations. Robert is also an avid scuba diving instructor and underwater cave diver.

Board Meeting

The next board meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 15th, at 3 pm at the Rec. Center.  All interested members are invited to attend. Visitors are also welcome.

A call for officers and board members
by Warren Sanders

The last official function of the Past President is to chair the nominating committee for next year.  You can make this activity easier for us if you will volunteer for an office or to be on the Board of Directors.  There is no requirement for longevity in the Club or for past experience.  Most of the positions require very little time commitment: a monthly meeting (afternoon of the 2nd Tuesday of each month) and a little time to prepare for the meeting.  Some positions require a report for each meeting, but the reports do not need to be lengthy.

If you have any interest in serving our Club in this way, please call me @ 408-0304 or email me @ wsanders@chartertn.net.  Contacting me does not mean that you have volunteered.  I am very willing to explain duties and responsibilities to anyone who contacts me.  We will also have some openings on various committees, and will welcome inquiries about those positions also.

Thank you for giving this your consideration.

Two SIGs are now meeting each month.  The meetings last for about an hour and half.

Digital Photography-second Thursday at 3:00 PM at Chota Rec Center (contact Jim Noonan at 458-9940)

Computer Hardware-(contact Vince Alline at 824-3380)

Do you want to be a part of these exciting programs or just ask questions about SIGs?  You can receive meeting announcements and organization information by sending your e-mail address to me at tvdon@chartertn.net, or call at 458-2142 or see me at the TVCUC general meeting.  Also, help is available to start additional SIGs by expressing your special interest.  You do not have to be the expert to lead a SIG, to propose the organization of a SIG, just have an interest in the subject matter.  In the future, new SIGs are expected to be created if persons who attend the classes being planned want to continue the learning experience.

Technical Access Program (TAP)

Below is a story sent us by Dale Noll and is just one of the many stories that surrounds this very beneficial project.  Thanks guys!

                                                              A little bit of Heaven

There was a light knock on the garage door at the Workhouse.  It was a Saturday morning about 10 o'clock.  The folks were here to pick up a computer systems.  So entered the lady who was the recipient sponsor.  Close behind was a young woman with a babe in her arms.   Probably about 6 months.

Warren lead them both to the "kitchen" to get the paperwork signed.  Then, to the front room to select a computer system.   A system was selected and taken outside to the Van and loaded.  The young lady several times said thank you and was off.

Just while loading the 1st computer, a second small, somewhat used car had parked, and another young lady greeted us.  She too was sponsored by the same person as the first recipient.   She had her small son of about 5-6 year old, who walked with a significant limp.   He felt right at home as he bounded around while Mom and Warren went in to sign the necessary papers, then to select a computer system.

Outside the computer system was loaded, but was just a little too much for the small trunk, so part of the hardware was put into the front seat.   The back seat was quite full with some groceries, etc., and a car seat for the little guy.

After loading the system, the young mother said "thank you Warren, thank you, thank you so much".   Warren acknowledged her and said he hoped she would have good luck with everything.  She then came forward to Warren to give a hug.  A gentle hug was returned.  My eyes got blurry, as I looked away. Just then the little guy came to Warren.  He had his hand out and was greeted with a handshake by Warren, and then give me a "high five" sign.

In a barely audible voice he said something like " Thank you Warren."  I'm sure that my eyes were not the only blurry ones now.  There needs to be an angel around for these folks.  As I related this to my wife that evening, tears were again available.

I thought - this has got to be a little bit of Heaven.

To just about everyone - now, I don't have to tell you why we go to the Workhouse as often as possible to prepare the computer giveaway systems.  God bless you all.
