A call for officers and board members
by Warren Sanders

The last official function of the Past President is to chair the nominating committee for next year.  You can make this activity easier for us if you will volunteer for an office or to be on the Board of Directors.  There is no requirement for longevity in the Club or for past experience.  Most of the positions require very little time commitment; a monthly meeting (afternoon on the 2nd Tuesday of each month) and a little time to prepare for the meeting.  Some of the positions require a report for each meeting, but the reports do not need to be lengthy.

If you have any interest in serving our Club in this way, please call me @408-0304 or email me at wsanders@chartertn.net.  Contacting me does not mean that you have volunteered.  I am very willing to explain duties and responsibilities to anyone who contacts me. We will also have some openings on various committees, and will welcome inquiries about those positions also.

I know you are aware that our club exists due to the fact that people like you have volunteered their time and efforts to it.  Please consider taking an active part in what we do!

Thank you for giving this your consideration.

Special Interest Groups (SIG's)
by Don Stieghan

Three SIGs are now meeting each month.  The meetings last for about an hour and half.

Genealogy-                First Thursday at 3:00 PM at Chota Rec Center.
                                             (contact Don Stieghan at 458-2142)
Digital Photography-  Second Thursday at 3:00 PM at Chota Rec Center
                                             (contact Jim Noonan at 458-9940)
Computer Hardware-   Third, For information and details -
                                             (contact Vince Alline at 824-3380)

Do you want to be a part of these exciting programs or just ask questions about SIGs?  You can receive meeting announcements and organization information.  Just send your e-mail address to me at tvdon@chartertn.net, or call at 458-2142 or see me at the TVCUC general meeting.  Also, help is available to start additional SIGs by expressing your special interest.  You do not have to be the expert to lead a SIG to propose the organization of one, just have an interest in the subject matter.

In the future, new SIGs will probably result from the classes being planned.
TAP (Technology Access Program)
by Warren Sanders

For more than a year members of our Club have  been cleaning and fixing donated computers in order to give them to deserving and qualified families in East Tennessee. The program is referred to as the Technology Access Program or TAP for short. Since June 2007, more than 100 systems have gone to families touching more than 200 children.

Since TAP's inception, the Tellico Village Community Church has allowed the use of one of the model homes donated to the church by the Cooper family for this project. With the planned expansion of the church, that space will no longer be available. Therefore, the TVCUC is working to raise funds to acquire a new space.

Anyone interested in donating to TVCUC, a non-profit 501(c)3 agency, is asked to contact
Warren Sanders who is the co-chairman for the drive. Warren can be reached at his home at  (865) 408-0304 or wsanders@chartertn.net.

Learning Center
by Bob Muggie

Following my class in How Computers Work, Ken Ray has completed a class series in Microsoft Works.  We had hoped to get more classes scheduled this month, but summer absences for some of our most qualified instructors have held things up.

I hope to have some additional offerings for you at the next meeting, but as of today (Friday, August 29) there are none.  I also plan other ways to inform you about upcoming classes.  If possible, these ideas include the Connection, Channel 3, the new Volunteer Press newspaper, the club website, and even general e-mails to club membership.  Hopefully these ideas will give you more advance notice.  We will also allow class sign-up and fee payment at the first session of a scheduled class if you were unable to sign up at a general meeting.

From experiences gained by Ken Ray in his classes, we are also considering an additional approach; having open house style labs, where several of us would staff the learning center for three hour periods.  Members can come and get help on various topics or subjects at these labs.  Obviously there can be no guarantee that a specific question could be answered at a given session, but it might be a good alternative for some of you.  Give me your comments on this at the next general meeting.

Free Stuff
by Frank Fritchman

Due to the crash of my computer late this month I will have nothing to share this month.  As you can see I am back up and running but lost many of my email files.

I did not back up as well as I thought I had, so be warned - "Learn how to backup your data files and do it regularly, (I did).  And your emails (I did not)!  It will be time well invested!"
=================================================================
It has been a long month for the Fritchmans for many reasons, not the least of which was the crash of my PC during the last half (newsletter time) of the month.  I am blessed to have two systems in our home so, as limited as this letter is, I could still get it published.

See you at the next meeting.
