Tips and Tricks

A New Life for your Old Router

I wanted to extend my wireless network into my basement.  I also wanted to be able to connect wired devices to the network in the basement as well and it was inconvenient to run a Cat 5 cable there.  Very inconvenient.

I found a Netgear product that would do the trick, but, apparently, they aren't selling it yet.  In fact, they did not even respond to my email asking about it.

Backup

Your hard drive will crash. Will your data be safe?

There are lots of tools to backup your data, but the most important tool is you. You have to decide to make backup a part of your routine. And you have to know what files are important to backup. Do you know where your pictures, music, financial and other valuable data are stored? Well if you don't know, how can you do a backup?

Power Button

Do you know how to turn your computer off?
You probably think all you need do is hit the switch on the front of the computer case, but you would be wrong. You have to hit the switch and hold it in place for 5 to 7 seconds (it will seem longer) to get it to power down.

That's because that switch is programmable (settings in Vista are found in power options) and the default action is not to shut off the power.
