Newsletter – September 2019

September 19, 2019 By David Leaman

So, Hello!
It’s time—actually it is past time—to get our volunteers in place for the upcoming Board of Directors Elections.  As we have so, so many times in the past asked for people to step forward and help to keep this club going and not had any response other than “I don’t know Computers” or “I don’t know IT,” we are facing that again.  Both positions that are open basically require fundamental Business Office skills like light typing and file management.  For the VP it also requires giving and monitoring e-mail and file storage permissions for the Club.  Both also have the responsibility to help guide and manage the Club through input and voting at Club Board Meetings to ensure we continue to serve our Members.
This is the bottom line:  Neither requires skills to solve “computer problems;” that is what FLS does.
We must have these positions filled to continue to exist.
We have new Tours to Provision Healthcare Proton Therapy Center in Knoxville and to ProNova in Maryville next month, as well as another tour of the 911 Emergency Dispatch Center in Loudon.  All of these tours were well received earlier this year and, if you haven’t been, we encourage you to take advantage of these membership opportunities.
Our upcoming General Meeting Presentation in October will feature a representative from BB&T Bank on protecting yourself while using credit cards on line.
We also have our State of the Club and Elections in November.
We know you all are busy, but we do need help, specifically for the Vice President and Secretary vacancies in 2020.  It does not take huge amounts of time, and it rewards with huge amounts of satisfaction, knowing how much we help others—of all ages.
Membership Renewal for 2020 begins October 1, 2019.

Newsletter – August 2019

August 20, 2019 By David Leaman

Many of us have had the opportunity to learn more about places that help us live our lives with hope and with help.  We have had great turnouts for our Proton Therapy Center and the 911 Center I Loudon tours, and we are working on adding more tours to the calendar this year, hopefully to venues where we can see how computers aid in manufacturing the adult toys many of us enjoy on Tellico Lake—Sea Ray and MasterCraft.

Our upcoming General Meeting Presentations will continue to provide information on protecting yourself while enjoying the use of your electronic devices.  September will be a live presentation on how to use a Password Manager application to better manage all those passwords required for so many sites on the internet and how to use them for more than you might expect.  October we will be having a representative from the local bank, BB&T, on using and protecting Credit Cards while shopping on line.

We are also heading into when we need to have our Elections, November.

We know you all are busy, but we do need help, specifically for Vice President and Secretary.  It does not take huge amounts of time, and it rewards with huge amounts of satisfaction knowing how much we help others—of all ages.

Membership Renewal for 2020 begins October 1, 2019.  We hop you choose to continue your membership in the Club and invite your friends and neighbors to join, as well.

We hope that all of you enjoy the rest of the Summer Months and are looking forward to the upcoming change to Fall.

Newsletter – July 2019

July 18, 2019 By David Leaman

So, Hello!

We hope that all of you are enjoying the Summer Months.

With the first half of the year behind us we now need to look ahead, not just to the next few warm months, but to the next year.

We are looking for you to help continue the great work The Club does for our members and community by our joining our enthusiastic group of Volunteers that make this all possible.

We know that some of you are hesitant about helping, thinking that you have to be some kind of “computer nerd,” but that is so far from true.  All you need is a desire to feel good about helping make things better for others.  The simple skills learned in the day-to-day work life prepared you well to serve on the TVCUC board of directors in nearly any capacity.

For example:  We all used Microsoft Word to write things like letters and learned how to save those–that is what our Secretary does–basic Office skills.  Make variations of Forms and make schedules–that is what our TellicoLife Admin does.  Plan a party–that is what our Picnic Chair does.

There are a couple of positions that take a little more “computer-related understanding” to help maintain the online records and Club information centers.  And, obviously, FLS volunteers needs to have an understanding of how computers connect to things and how to install and run some programs.  Just a desire to learn is needed for us to teach you these basic proficiencies, and we can provide all the support you need to succeed.

No need for anyone to know how to code or replace parts.

The biggest thing anyone needs is:   Wanting to help a Club that is made to help others.

Think of how good it feels to help someone.  In our case a whole bunch of “someones.”

Volunteer to help us, help others.  You only need enthusiasm.

It is reminiscent of what one of our youngest Presidents called for so many years ago.

Newsletter – June 2019

June 19, 2019 By David Leaman

On June 4th we had a good turnout for our annual picnic/social at the Tugaloo Pavilion. It was a beautiful afternoon and evening. The food was excellent and the crowd was congenial. I believe everyone had a good time. We presented about 15 door prizes, many $25 vouchers for Tellico Village restaurants. Joanne Nye won the Grand Door Prize, a TAP-refurbished laptop computer. Congratulations, Joanne!

I would like to express heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers who helped plan and execute the picnic. I especially want to recognize Kathy Milam and Kathy Economy, our event coordinators, for their excellent organization and coordination of the picnic from start to finish. Thank you!!! We simply could not have had such an enjoyable event without your dedication and hard work, which was abundantly evident to all in attendance.

In regards to volunteerism, I would like to highlight the simple fact that the Club cannot function without members willing to volunteer their time and talent. As we take a break for the summer, I ask all our members to consider some volunteer opportunities that are coming up this year. A nominating committee has been organized to find candidates for a few key vacancies in our upcoming election of officers for next year. None of these positions requires any particular computer proficiency, only a willingness to give a few hours each month to keep your Club running effectively. Most of the positions are for a term of one year. More information about this will be forthcoming later this summer. I ask you to consider stepping up and help us fill the vacancies for next year’s board.

Enjoy your summer!

Newsletter – April 2019

April 15, 2019 By David Leaman

April started off with an amazing evening, our General Meeting hosting Dr. Terry Douglass, CEO of Provision Healthcare and ProNova along with other companies.

To be able to hear, first hand, from one of the pioneers in creating PET Scans and developing that technology into an invaluable tool to identify exactly where and how extensive a cancerous tumor is, so as to limit the amount of radiation is needed when that is determined to be the course of treatment.  Building on that path followed treatment centers and continuing the path further with another company to build the next generation of equipment delivering that treatment.

Dr. Douglass’ presentation is now available in the Archive section of the TVCUC.ORG website.  As the night was videotaped, we will be adding links to that as soon as TVB has them ready. Full Video of the presentation is available in our new Video Section

In April also began plans for very Special Event:  TAP presenting a system to the 10,000th child helped by TAP.  The Event will be May 7th at the Loudon High School.  More information will be sent out for this monumental achievement, only made possible by all those who have given selflessly over so many years, our TAP volunteers.
