Mac SIG November 2020

December 7, 2020 By David Leaman

Big Sur has been released and this video is just a brief tour of it. Right now plans are for a Zoom meeting in January to cover Big Sur in depth. Let’s hope that works our for us!

One of our members reports that Acronis online backup was inoperable after he installed Big Sur (but he has had problems with that following updates of other operating systems).

Larry McJunkin & I can report that we have had no issues, although I did have to call AppleCare to get my Messages app to (continue to) communicate among devices—so drop me a note if you have a problem with that.

Mac SIG October 2020

October 24, 2020 By David Leaman

Another month with no Mac User meeting, but we might try to set up a Zoom meeting for January (Larry McJunckin says he can guide me through the process!). Big Sur should be out by then, so we’ll see what we can do.

If you have recently updated your MacOS (In Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur), you should be running Safari 14. This video is quite informative.

How To Use the Safari 14 Start Page

In Safari 14 the new Start Page replaces Top Sites. The Start Page has several sections, including your Favorites, Frequently Visited sites and more. You can customize the Start Page to act much like the old Top Sites page, while also including your Reading List and iCloud Tabs pages.

I sent you a separate message on things new to iOS14, but the following is an “all-in-one.”
iOS 14: Guides, tips, tricks, and everything you need to know about Apple’s new iPhone OS

How to toggle location precision for apps in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14

The latest OS provides even more privacy related to how closely apps can track your location.

Customize Safari With These 10 Preferences
Safari has a lot of preferences but you can start customizing how it works by focusing on these 10. Change the behavior of what happens when you open a new window or tab, click on a link, or download a file. Also learn how to reduce clutter when typing in the address field.

3 Ways To Crop Photos On a Mac
You can crop a photo using the tools that come with every Mac. If the photo is in the Photos app, you can use the cropping function in the editing tools there. If the photo is an independent file, you can use Preview or Markup Tools to crop it.

Stay safe…

Mac SIG Update 11-18-19

November 18, 2019 By David Leaman

There is no Mac Users meeting this month—our next one will be January 27. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. A reminder, however, that TVCUC dues are due, in case you haven’t yet logged into TellicoLife to join for 2020.

Here a list of Catalina keyboard shortcuts for your viewing pleasure. I advocate using keyboard shortcuts when you can—they save time, stress on your wrists, etc.

I found 3 articles in the November 2019 issue of Macworld that may be of interest to you. I have stored the PDF document to share Here.  The articles are as follows:

  • Find your documents and desktop folder contents after disabling iCloud sync
  • Can’t find and app on your Mac? Pinpoint it with System Information
  • Get the best image export from Photos in MacOS

More information for your reading pleasure…

Using Your Own Photos Or Graphics As Desktop Backgrounds

You don’t have to settle for using Apple’s images as your desktop background. You can use any photo from your library or image you can obtain as a desktop background. You can also make your own graphics in an image editing app or Keynote to use as a background. You can combine photos and graphics to make an ideal background.

21 Actually Useful Finder Tips And Tricks

Learn some useful everyday tips, tricks and techniques to make it easier to manage your files and folders in the macOS Catalina Finder. See how you can use things like Undo, Copy and Paste, the Path Bar, keyboard shortcuts and more to navigate around in the Finder and work with your files.

Understanding Windows, Tabs, Full Screen And Split Screen Modes

When working in apps on documents you can choose to have one document open per window, or multiple documents in tabs in that same window. Windows can be floating, resizable objects on your desktop, or you can go into full screen mode to fill the screen with the window or split screen mode to share the screen with exactly two app windows. You can also combine windows, tabs, and screen modes to work in many different ways.

macOS Catalina: How to make your iPhone and iPad appear on the Desktop

The Finder needs a slight adjustment to make items appear.

How to delete photos, links, and attachments from conversations in Messages

You can delete items you don’t want to keep or that you want to remove from taking up storage.

Tip: Use Grid View for Dock Downloads

If you keep a link to your Downloads folder in the Dock on the right, then Control+click (or right-click) it and set it to Grid view. This is the best view for this particular folder because you can drag and drop files in the folder directly from the Dock this way.
